Industrial STOMP helps companies to develop and implement effective outreach programs for their employees to participate in. Currently, the CEEO is working with National Instruments and Raytheon to implement programs with over 200 emplyee volunteers.
Overview:
The Industrial Student ? Teacher Outreach Mentorship Program (I-STOMP) will be a sustainable educational outreach program for helping industry support math, science, technology, and engineering (MSTE) K-12 education in communities where the company has a significant presence. The program will have a strong emphasis on elementary school education and will be developed in cooperation with Tufts University?s Center for Engineering Educational Outreach (CEEO) and the local company site. The program will use the LEGO Mindstorms for Schools technology to combine hands-on design projects with required MSTE content.
As part of the program, Tufts will provide K-12 teachers with professional development that addresses the effective use of the LEGO materials and the understanding of the associated MSTE content. Teacher participants will be provided with the necessary LEGO materials for their classroom and yearlong support from the program volunteers (company employees and local engineering college students if possible). This support team will also receive training on the use of the materials, necessary pedagogy and strategies for working in a classroom.
Goals of I-STOMP:
To create a sustainable outreach program for industry
To improve Math, Science, Technology, and Engineering (MSTE) education in schools surrounding corporate facilities using hands-on design projects
To create connections between employees and the local community
To foster an understanding of K-12 education in employees
To better understand how children and teachers learn engineering and how they can learn other fields through engineering
