Summary:
The Tufts Center for Engineering Educational Outreach Summer LEGO Engineering Institute is a way for educators to gain knowledge of
engineering concepts, LEGO hardware & software, and
associated pedagogy/educational theory. Exploration of the LEGO bricks
and related theory will primarily be done through participation in
hands-on, open-ended design projects.
There will be two sessions of the Summer LEGO Engineering Institute: one for ROBOLAB software and a second for NXT-G software.
The institute is open to any K-12 teacher, informal education
provider, volunteer, or member of industry interested in learning about
LEGO Engineering.
Dates:
July 7-11, 2008: ROBOLAB Software with the RCX and NXT
Monday-Thursday 9am-4pm
Friday 9am-3pm
July 28-August 1, 2008: NXT-G Software with the NXT
Monday-Thursday 9am-4pm
Friday 9am-3pm
Instructors:
- Members of the staff of the Center for Engineering Educational Outreach
Participants will:
- Learn about the Engineering Design Process
- Learn LEGO building techniques
- Learn about programming with ROBOLAB or NXT-G
- Participate in hands-on activities that focus on topics such as fractions and graphing.
- Explore Gearing and Gear Ratios
- Explore the educational pedagogy and theory of using hands-on engineering projects
- Investigate how to teach other content (math, science, reading) through engineering based projects
- Discuss and develop classroom management strategies
Participants will leave with:
- A collection of classroom tested LEGO activities
- An introduction to LEGO related resources
- A written plan for implementation in your educational setting
- A workbook of building and programming resources
