Biography
Amy Sarofian-Butin was the lead teacher for the Engineering Pathway at Lawrence High School (LHS) and is now the STEM Starter Coordinator for North Shore Community College in Massachusetts. Sarofian-Butin is also a PhD student in Tufts University’s STEM Education program. Her doctoral research focuses on the intersection of education, poverty, and urban space & policy. Prior to working in Lawrence, Sarofian-Butin had experience in the architecture field and in higher education administration. She held “advanced teacher” status in her district, has been nominated for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), and is a member of UMass-Lowell’s Engineering Action Network (EAN). Sarofian-Butin was a member of her school’s CRT (Culturally Responsive Teaching) Committee, and has given conference presentations and professional development workshops on pedagogy, curriculum, and multilingual learners. She is passionate about issues of equity and access within the K-16 education pipeline, particularly for first generation youth interested in STEM.
