Biography

Geling (Jazz) Xu is a STEM education PhD student. She received an MS in Engineering Education Research from the University of Michigan. She worked as a research assistant for the NSF-funded grant, "Tools for Teaching and Learning Engineering Practices: Pathways Towards Productive Identity Work in Engineering" with Dr. Angela Calabrese Barton. She focused on the sustainability community in the I-Engineering framework, worked together with a STEM school in Lansing, MI, improved the curriculum design, supported the class, and helped teachers apply the I-Engineering framework into their classroom as a part of STEM education (http://engineeriam.org/).



Geling received a BS in Technology, Engineering, and Design Education from North Carolina State University, and obtained North Carolina State Technology Teacher’s License. She taught in a STEM Magnet Middle School for 6-8 grade technology classes as a student teacher. Geling was attracted to Tufts FetLab and interdisciplinary STEM education and outreach. She is interested in K-12 technology and engineering education, LEGO education, robotics, 3D design, and MakerSpace.



Currently, Geling works with Dr. Chris Rogers and Dr. Jennifer Cross for the NSF-funded grant: Integrating Artificial Intelligence with Smart Engineering and English Language Arts in Upper Elementary Education to support upper elementary school students learning AI and ML without coding, develop a low-cost smart motor and apply it to the novel engineering/English language arts class. Outside of school and work at Tufts CEEO, Geling enjoys playing the drums, cooking, playing basketball, traveling, and volunteering at K-12 schools, and she has two adorable cats.
