Biography

Geling (Jazz) Xu is a STEM education PhD student. She is interested in K-12 technology and engineering education, robotics, MakerSpace, making and learning, curriculum, and teachers’ PD design. Currently, Geling works for an NSF-funded grant: “Biomimicry as an Authentic Anchor” with Dr. Kristen Wendell and TERC to develop teachers' professional development materials to support middle school STEM teachers teaching biomimicry in their classrooms. Before that, Geling worked at CEEO for an NSF-funded grant: Integrating Artificial Intelligence with Smart Engineering and English Language Arts in Upper Elementary Education to support upper elementary school students learning AI and ML without coding. They used a low-cost smart motor and applied it to the novel engineering/English language arts class.

At the University of Michigan, she worked with Dr.Angela Calabrese Barton for the NSF-funded grant, "Tools for Teaching and Learning Engineering Practices: Pathways Towards Productive Identity Work in Engineering". She focused on the sustainability community in the I-Engineering framework, worked together with a STEM school in Lansing, MI, improved the curriculum design, supported the class, and helped teachers apply the I-Engineering framework into their classroom as a part of STEM education (http://engineeriam.org/).

Geling obtained a North Carolina State Technology Teacher’s License and she taught PLTW in a STEM Magnet Middle School for 6-8 grade technology classes as a student teacher in North Carolina. Currently, she teaches LEGO Robotics enrichment class at a GIFT school in Winchester, MA.

Outside of school and work at Tufts CEEO, Geling enjoys playing the drums, cooking, playing basketball, playing LEGO, traveling, and volunteering at K-12 schools, and she has two adorable cats.

CEEO Responsibilities:
Geling works as a research assistant for Dr. Kristen Wendell, Dr. Brian Gravel, and John R. Beaver Professor Dr. Chris Rogers.
